About PEIL

PEIL reads your surroundings. Water, building, neighbourhood. Measurements and registers in one row: the number, what it means, where it comes from.

What PEIL does

PEIL gathers the measurements and registers that concern your surroundings and puts them in one row: the water level of the canals, what is registered about a building, how a neighbourhood is doing on energy. Every number comes with what it means, who measured it, when, and what it does not say.

It lives in three places: the app PEIL Amsterdam for the water, the checks on peilje.nl per address or neighbourhood, and this portal.

The three rules

source

Who says it stands next to it. A number without the name of its source does not appear here.

date

When it was measured stands next to it, as a real date. Never "recently" or "just now".

limit

What it does not say is there too. A measurement nearby is not a measurement under your house, and we write that down.

What PEIL is not

PEIL is an independent private initiative: not a government service, not a valuer, not an estate agent, not an adviser. The app is not an official navigation aid. We give no advice and estimate no energy label or property value. Where we make an estimate it says "inschatting van Peil" (PEIL's estimate), and where we do not know something it says "onbekend" (unknown) instead of a number. What that means per check is stated on the check itself and in the terms.

Where the data comes from

Four families; every page states which of them fills it.

National base registers

BAG (buildings and addressable objects), BRO (groundwater), AHN (elevation), Kadaster PDOK (address search and parcel). Government data under the stated reuse terms, with attribution.

National monitoring networks and models

RIVM (noise, air), LIWO (flood scenarios), EP-Online (energy labels), RVO and the national government (schemes), CBS (statistics per neighbourhood, attributed as CBS asks).

The City of Amsterdam and the water boards

Monuments, trees, historical soil information, tariffs and by-laws, target water levels. Municipal datasets carry their own terms of use; where a dataset does not allow reuse we do not use it.

What we collect or compute ourselves

Routes, places, stories and derived numbers. Those carry the label "berekend" (computed) or "inschatting van Peil" (PEIL's estimate). The source line under a value always names the source itself, so you can check with the owner what is allowed.
