Accessibility

PEIL aims for WCAG 2.1 level AA on peil.nu and peilje.nl. This is what we do for it, what we do not meet yet, and where to report it when something does not work for you.

last revised: 18-08-2026

What is in place now

  • Every page starts with a skip link to the content.
  • Header, content and footer are real landmarks, and there is exactly one h1 per page.
  • Keyboard focus is visible: a 2 px frame around the focused element, dark blue on the light surfaces and white on the dark blue band.
  • Meaning never hangs on colour alone. A status is also named in words: "onbekend" (unknown), "inschatting van Peil" (PEIL's estimate), "berekend" (computed).
  • Text scales with your browser setting and the page stays readable on a narrow screen; nothing is hidden to save space, rows stack.
  • No elements move and there is no automatic animation.
  • These pages work without JavaScript. Two places do use it: the checks on peilje.nl compute with it (the explanation and the sources on those pages are there without it too), and on peil.nu/champagne the stock notice and the withdrawal button use it. With JavaScript off the withdrawal button does not work; withdrawing by e-mail is always possible, and the model form is right there on the page.
  • Every page exists in Dutch and in English, with a switch in the header, hreflang for search engines and lang so screen readers know the page language.
  • Colour contrast is measured, not estimated: the navy on paper white clears the AA norm by a margin. Red is an accent colour for the mark, actions, the gauge staff and a written error state; meaning never depends on that colour alone.

What we do not meet yet

This statement has not been reviewed by an external party and is not based on a full audit. We looked ourselves, and that is something else. What we see ourselves:

  • The map in the app PEIL Amsterdam cannot be operated with the keyboard. Everything on that map is meant to be available in text too, but that is not yet the case everywhere.
  • The input fields on the peilje.nl checks are labelled, but the suggestion list under an address field has not yet been tested with a screen reader.
  • There is no complete automatic accessibility test in our publishing. The publication check guards several structural points, but we find other errors by looking, so they can remain for a while.
  • Documents PEIL later delivers as PDF have not yet been tested for accessibility.

Reporting that something does not work

Send a message to info@peil.nu with the page and what went wrong. We respond within 14 days. If a problem keeps you from reading something you need, say so: we then send you the content in a form that does work.

Why this page exists

PEIL is a private initiative and does not fall under the statutory obligation that applies to public bodies. We find a statement fitting anyway: a site that gives everything a source, a date and a limit should also write down what it knows and does not know about its own usability.

PEIL is an independent beta and not an official body or an official navigation aid.
